Its operating subsidiary, TCF Bank, ran 478 branches across Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Colorado, Wisconsin, Ohio and South Dakota, alongside specialty lending and leasing businesses in all 50 states, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Its corporate history reaches back to Chemical State Savings Bank, founded in 1917. The bank became Chemical Bank Trust in 1964 and Chemical Bank in 1974. Chemical Financial expanded through acquisitions, including O.A.K. Financial in 2010, Northwestern Bank in 2014, Monarch Community Bancorp and Lake Michigan Financial Corporation in 2015, and Talmer Bancorp in 2016. In 2017, David T. Provost succeeded retiring chief executive David B. Ramaker. The company announced a headquarters move to Detroit in July 2018. In 2019, it merged with TCF Financial Corporation, the third-largest bank in Minneapolis–Saint Paul, and adopted the TCF Financial Corporation name. TCF sold its seven Arizona branches in 2020. Huntington Bancshares acquired TCF in June 2021; as part of gaining regulatory approval, TCF sold 13 Michigan branches to Horizon Bank. TCF’s stadium and convention-center naming rights also transitioned to Huntington branding after the merger.
