Keep railroad history in the conversation with a Texas and Pacific Railway can cooler. The company’s 1871 charter envisioned a southern transcontinental line, but its rails reached Sierra Blanca, Texas, where they connected with another railroad in 1881. Its story continued through changing company ties and a long legacy across Texas. Made for gatherings, this piece gives rail fans and collectors a simple way to celebrate the ambition, limits, and lasting heritage of the T&P.
The Texas and Pacific Railway Company was created by federal charter in 1871 to build a southern transcontinental railroad between Marshall, Texas, and San Diego, California. Its line never reached San Diego; in 1881 it connected with the Southern Pacific at Sierra Blanca, Texas. The railway opened its first line between Longview and Dallas on July 1, 1873, and placed the Marshall-to-Texarkana line in service that December. After construction difficulties, financier Jay Gould acquired an interest in 1879. The Missouri Pacific Railroad leased the T&P from 1881 to 1885, then maintained a cooperative relationship with it. Missouri Pacific gained majority ownership in 1928, while the T&P continued as a separate operating company until their merger on October 15, 1976. Union Pacific purchased Missouri Pacific in 1980; approval followed in 1982, and the actual merger took place on January 1, 1997. In Fort Worth, the former T&P station and offices became condominiums, and station platforms entered commuter service in 2001 as a terminus for the Trinity Railway Express. The railway also helped establish the name of the 2-10-4 locomotive type, nicknamed “Texas” after locomotives delivered to the T&P in 1925.
