GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep a piece of Richmond retail history close with this Thalhimers double-sided keychain charm. The company began as William Thalhimer’s dry goods store in 1842 and became a regional department-store name, remembered for its downtown flagship at Seventh and Broad Streets. Its history also includes the Richmond Room and a 1992 transition into The Hecht Company. A compact keepsake for former shoppers, local-history enthusiasts, and collectors drawn to the stories behind familiar Southern stores.
Thalhimers began in Richmond, Virginia, where William Thalhimer, an immigrant from Germany, opened a dry goods store in 1842. His grandson, William B. Thalhimer, developed it into Richmond’s first department store, and the business grew into a regional chain across Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, with a store in Memphis, Tennessee. Its downtown Richmond flagship stood at Seventh and Broad Streets; an addition was built in 1939. The store’s Richmond Room restaurant and its fried-chicken spin-off, Golden Skillet, became part of its local history. In 1978, California-based Carter Hawley Hale Stores acquired the chain. In 1990, Carter Hawley Hale sold Thalhimers to St. Louis-based May Company for $325 million. In February 1992, Thalhimers merged into The Hecht Company, May’s Washington, DC division. Nearly all locations were rebranded as Hecht’s; two Charleston stores and the Memphis store went to Dillard’s. The Lynnhaven Mall location remained Thalhimers until May 1992, then became a second Hecht’s location in November. After Federated Department Stores acquired May Company in 2005, many former Thalhimers-area Hecht’s stores became part of Macy’s South in 2006. The downtown Richmond flagship closed in January 1992 and was demolished in 2004.
