Product Details & Size Guide
Carry a piece of Jacksonville construction history with this Auchter-inspired backpack. Founded by engineer George D. Auchter in 1929, the company grew from bridge and overpass work into a major Florida contractor whose projects included civic buildings, airports, hospitals, and factories. Its wartime shipyard also supported the U.S. Navy's emergency shipbuilding effort. A thoughtful choice for architecture fans, engineering enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates the companies that helped shape a city.
Founded in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1929 by engineer George D. Auchter, the company grew from bridge and overpass work into a general construction contractor. Its projects included civic and corporate buildings, bridges, factories, hospitals, airports, and other infrastructure. During World War II, it supported the U.S. Navy's Emergency Shipbuilding Program, building floating repair docks, barges, and concrete ships. Its shipyard closed in February 1946, and the company returned to civil construction and high-rise projects. George Auchter Jr. sold the business to an investor group in 1981. In 1993, H. Glass Jr. bought out the other investors and retained the Auchter name; the company expanded across Florida and moved its headquarters to the University of North Florida's First Coast Technology Park in 1999. After financial difficulties affected a courthouse bid in 2006, Perry-McCall Construction purchased the company on March 26, 2007. The proposed merger was terminated, and Auchter closed on December 31, 2007. Its Jacksonville legacy includes City Hall, Jacksonville International Airport, bridges, and other civic landmarks.
