Keep a reminder of The Broadway's retail story close at hand with this Double-Sided Keychain Charm. Arthur Letts started operating the Los Angeles store in 1896 at Broadway and Fourth Street, and the business grew into a major regional chain with a landmark downtown flagship. Its history includes expansion to Hollywood and Pasadena, the Broadway-Hale era, and later changes in ownership and store names. A thoughtful choice for department-store history enthusiasts, Los Angeles collectors, and anyone who remembers shopping across the western markets it served.

The Broadway was a Los Angeles department store chain founded by English-born Arthur Letts Sr. It began operating on February 24, 1896, after Letts acquired the name, assets, fixtures, and lease of the failed J. A. Williams & Co. Dry Goods Store. The original shop stood at Broadway and Fourth Street. As Los Angeles grew, the business expanded into neighboring storefronts and built a nine-story downtown flagship, completed in 1915. The company broadened its reach by acquiring the B. H. Dyas Hollywood store in 1931 and opening a Pasadena store in 1940. In 1950 it merged with Sacramento-based Hale Brothers to form Broadway-Hale Stores, acquired Milliron's Westchester branch, and continued growing through purchases including Marston's in San Diego and Korricks in Phoenix. Later expansion reached Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado. In 1979, operations were divided between Southern California and a Southwest division headquartered in Phoenix. Parent Carter Hawley Hale Stores later faced financial difficulties. Federated Department Stores acquired the chain in 1995. In 1996, most locations became Macy's; selected stores reopened as Bloomingdale's, while many remaining locations were sold to Sears. The Broadway name thus passed from an independent retailer into a larger department-store portfolio.
