Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of Spokane’s retail heritage. The Crescent began as Spokane Dry Goods Company, opening on West Riverside Avenue on August 5, 1889, as the city recovered from the Great Fire. Its promise to “be fair to everyone” helped establish a lasting local reputation, while its downtown building and later suburban stores marked the region’s growth. This mug makes a considered keepsake for former Crescent shoppers, department-store history fans, and Spokane collectors.
The Crescent began as the Spokane Dry Goods Company in Spokane, Washington. Its original store on West Riverside Avenue opened on August 5, 1889, one day after the Great Fire destroyed much of downtown. Owners Robert B. Paterson and James M. Comstock kept prices steady during the recovery, establishing the motto “be fair to everyone.” The store became Spokane’s leading department store. Construction of its downtown building began in 1917 under architect Loren L. Rand and continued through 1919; later expansions enlarged it, including the 1949 purchase of the adjacent Alexander Building and a final addition in 1973. The chain opened its first suburban store at Northtown Mall in 1959 and another at University City in Spokane Valley in 1969. Chicago-based Marshall Field & Company purchased The Crescent in 1962. In 1982, BATUS Retail Group acquired the chain along with its parent, Marshall Field’s. Four Oregon stores were sold to The Crescent in 1987 and then to Lamonts in 1988. BATUS sold The Crescent and Frederick & Nelson in 1986; the Crescent stores took the Frederick & Nelson name in 1988. Frederick & Nelson entered bankruptcy and liquidated in 1992. The former downtown Spokane store is now Crescent Court, with retail stores and offices.
