Bring a piece of Scranton retail history into your everyday wardrobe with this Globe Store polo shirt. Founded in 1883 by John Simpson and John Clelland, the store grew from a local business selling dry goods, clothing, and furnishings into a familiar downtown destination. Its Wyoming Avenue home became known for expansive display windows, a broad fashion selection, and the Charl-Mont restaurant. This shirt celebrates the memories and community ties behind a Northeastern Pennsylvania department store remembered across generations.
The Globe Store was a regional department store in Scranton, Pennsylvania, founded in 1883 by John Simpson and John Clelland. Its early business offered dry goods, clothing, and furnishings. The Scranton store occupied the Cleland, Simpson & Taylor building on Wyoming Avenue; that original building was destroyed by fire on March 17, 1889. The store later became known for large display windows, a broad fashion selection, and the Charl-Mont restaurant, which was later converted to cafeteria service. The founding families operated the business until 1979, a decade after it became a division of John Wanamaker. In 1978, Carter Hawley Hale acquired Wanamaker and the Globe division. Following takeover battles, the company sold them to Woodward & Lothrop, which sold the Globe to local investors in 1989. Competition from suburban malls and retail consolidation contributed to financial difficulties. After filing for bankruptcy just after New Year's Day in 1994, the store closed in April, following the layoff of 400 workers and the seizure of its assets by PNC Bank. The former store building was converted to offices. In 2016, Lackawanna County announced plans to relocate county offices there; by 2019, county government had moved in while restoration continued.
