The Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. began in New York City on October 2, 1930, when H.K. McCann Co., founded in 1911, merged with Erickson Co., founded in 1902, to create McCann-Erickson. In 1960, McCann was reorganized into four operating units under a new holding company, and in January 1961 it was renamed Interpublic Group, creating a marketing-services management holding company with McCann-Erickson as a subsidiary. McCann-Erickson combined its domestic and international branches into a worldwide agency in late 1973, while McCann-Erickson World Group was formed in 1997 and renamed McCann Worldgroup in 2004. IPG expanded through acquisitions including Deutsch in 2000, True North Communications and its Foote, Cone & Belding business in 2001, Reprise Media in 2007, and Acxiom's Marketing Solutions business in 2018. Mediabrands launched in 2008, FCB became the international network name in 2014, and MullenLowe Group emerged from the Mullen and Lowe and Partners combination in 2016. Omnicom completed its acquisition of IPG on November 26, 2025.
