Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a small reminder of a Chicago retail name with roots reaching back to 1912. Sam Berman's West Town furniture store grew into Harlem Furniture, added locations across the region, and later adopted the name The RoomPlace. The company's changing identity and brief 2024 return to its original name make this business card holder a fitting desk accessory for retail-history enthusiasts, former customers, and collectors of Midwest business memorabilia.
The RoomPlace began in 1912, when Sam Berman opened a small furniture store in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. In 1950, the business opened a store on Harlem Avenue under the name Harlem Furniture. It added a Chicago store near 79th Street and Cicero Avenue in 1985, then expanded to Hoffman Estates, Homewood and Vernon Hills by 1990. A distribution center opened in Hillside by 1988. In the early 2000s, Harlem Furniture adopted the name The RoomPlace; later growth included an Orland Park store and an expansion of its distribution center from 200,000 to more than 300,000 square feet. In 2011, former CEO Bruce Berman acquired the retailer for $15.1 million. A 2016 fire destroyed its Woodridge distribution center, and the company announced an Indianapolis-area expansion that year. The RoomPlace filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2024. After attempts to sell its assets and an announcement that remaining stores would close, it briefly resumed operations under its original Harlem Furniture name, opening four stores. That venture lasted only a few months.
