GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of The Wiz, the New York City electronics chain founded in 1977 and remembered by generations of Northeast shoppers. Its transition to the Nobody Beats The Wiz name, memorable advertising, and major local sports sponsorships made it more than a store. This ceramic coffee mug celebrates that regional retail legacy, from the chain's high-growth years through its Cablevision ownership and 2003 closure. Ideal for desks, kitchens, and collectors' shelves.
The Wiz was an electronics-store chain founded in New York City in 1977 by Stephen Jemal, who included brothers Lawrence, Marvin, and Douglas Jemal in the business. Operating primarily across New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, the chain later adopted its familiar advertising slogan as its official name, Nobody Beats The Wiz. During the early and middle 1990s, it became a prominent sponsor of New York-area teams including the Yankees, Knicks, Mets, Nets, Rangers, Devils, and Islanders, while also sponsoring the Orioles, Flyers, Whalers, and Canadiens. Following a rapid expansion from about 20 locations to more than 80 in under a year, the company filed for bankruptcy in 1998 and Cablevision bought it for $80 million. At its peak, the retailer had 94 stores, 2,000 employees, and $1.4 billion in revenue across five states, plus music-only stores in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area. Cablevision later dropped the slogan, and the chain closed permanently in 2003. Marvin Jemal subsequently opened The Zone in several former Wiz sites; P.C. Richard acquired Wiz assets, chiefly its name, in September 2003.
