Thrifty PayLess Holdings, Inc. was a western United States pharmacy company formed in April 1994 when Los Angeles-based TCH Corporation acquired PayLess Drug Stores Northwest and adopted the Thrifty PayLess name. At the merger, Thrifty operated 495 stores and PayLess 543. PayLess traced its beginnings to L.J. Skaggs, who opened a Tacoma, Washington, store in 1932. Thrifty began as a Los Angeles retail operation in 1929, following the 1919 founding of drug wholesaler Borun Brothers. Its parent became Thrifty Corp. in 1977 as it expanded beyond pharmacies. After ownership changes involving Kmart and Pacific Lighting, Thrifty's owners acquired PayLess in 1994. The combined company consolidated its headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon, and completed the integration of its store and warehouse systems. In 1996, Rite Aid acquired Thrifty PayLess and about 1,000 West Coast stores. The Thrifty and PayLess store names remained in use until locations were converted to Rite Aid in 1998. Thrifty's ice cream tradition, which began in 1940, continued in former Thrifty stores after the acquisition.
