Bring a little airline history to your next get-together with this Tower Air can cooler. The carrier began charter operations in 1983 and grew into an internationally connected New York airline, flying Boeing 747s between JFK, Europe, and Israel. It also supported military and other charter missions before its 2000 shutdown. A fun choice for aviation enthusiasts, former travelers, and collectors, this piece recalls a distinctive name from the busy years of long-haul air travel.
Tower Air was a U.S. charter airline that also operated scheduled passenger flights from 1983 to 2000. Co-founded and managed by Morris K. Nachtomi, it began charter service with an international focus that included Israel. Its initial scheduled route linked New York, Brussels, and Tel Aviv; charters also served destinations such as Athens, Frankfurt, Rome, and Zurich. The airline acquired the Tower name from Tower Travel Corporation after Nachtomi’s earlier passenger-airline venture ended. Based at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, it moved through several airport facilities, renovating a former Pan Am hangar, Building 213, for a dedicated terminal in 1993 and adding gates in 1995. Tower Air flew Boeing 747-100 and 747-200 aircraft and carried passengers on scheduled routes as well as military and other charter missions. During the 1990–91 Gulf War, it evacuated U.S. citizens from Tel Aviv on return legs of military charters. Financial and operational difficulties mounted in the late 1990s. The airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 29, 2000, ended scheduled service on May 1, and surrendered its air operator’s certificate on November 28, 2000.
