Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
A small travel essential with a story rooted in Canadian retail history. Towers opened its first Canadian store in Scarborough on November 15, 1960, and grew into a chain whose departments and in-store services became part of everyday shopping for many families. Later, Quebec locations took the Bonimart name, and most stores joined Zellers in 1991. This luggage tag celebrates that changing chapter and suits collectors who enjoy carrying a piece of department-store nostalgia on their journeys.
Towers began as a New York-based chain and entered Canada when its first Canadian store opened on November 15, 1960, in Scarborough, Ontario. In March 1962, a group of Towers concessionaires incorporated as Allied Towers Merchants Ltd. After Towers Marts went bankrupt in 1963, Allied Towers Merchants purchased the 13 Canadian stores, first acquiring 43 percent of the outstanding shares and later gaining full control. In Quebec, the chain traded as Towers during the 1960s. In April 1971, Oshawa Group began changing the Quebec stores’ name to Bonimart, a program intended to promote the French character of its provincial subsidiaries. Towers departments operated as licensed concessions; some stores also included restaurants, photo labs, pharmacies, or paired grocery stores. In October 1990, Hudson’s Bay Company purchased the 51 Towers and Bonimart stores, intending to merge them with Zellers. In April 1991, 47 stores adopted the Zellers banner; other locations held closeout sales under their original names, in some cases into fall 1991. The Bonimart trademark belongs to Sobeys, successor to Oshawa Group. Ownership of the Towers name is unclear.
