Ukrop's Super Markets began in Richmond, Virginia, in 1937, when Joseph Ukrop founded the business. The family-operated supermarket company grew to 26 stores, primarily in the Richmond area, with locations also listed in Williamsburg, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, and Fredericksburg. It also operated Joe's Market, a Richmond specialty store named for its founder. Ukrop's became closely associated with customer service, baked goods, and prepared foods, while its stores were known for being closed on Sundays and for not selling alcohol. A Williamsburg location and a Roanoke location closed in 2009 because of low sales and limited brand recognition. On December 17, 2009, the company announced the sale of its 25 stores to Giant-Carlisle, a division of Netherlands-based Ahold, for $140 million. The sale closed February 8, 2010, and stores transitioned to the Martin's name in spring 2010. The Fredericksburg store was not included and closed. Ukrop's continued through its bakery and kitchen operations, with baked goods sold under the Ukrop's and Good Meadow brands.
