Founded by Joseph Ukrop in 1937, the family chain became a familiar name across Richmond and surrounding Virginia communities, admired for bakery goods, prepared foods, and customer service. Ukrop's Super Markets was founded in 1937 by Joseph Ukrop and operated family supermarkets in Richmond, Virginia, and the surrounding area. At its peak, the company had 26 stores, chiefly in the Richmond market, with locations in Williamsburg, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, and Fredericksburg. It also ran Joe's Market, a Richmond specialty store named for its founder. The chain was known locally for customer service, baked goods, and prepared foods, while its Sunday closures and policy against alcohol sales set it apart from competing supermarkets. In 1976, Ukrop's bought Richmond's Dot's Pastry Shop, using that name for years before changing it to Ukrop's Bakery. In 2009, locations in Williamsburg and Roanoke closed amid low sales and limited brand recognition. Giant-Carlisle, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Ahold, announced its purchase of 25 Ukrop's stores on December 17, 2009, for $140 million. The sale closed February 8, 2010, and stores became Martin's in spring 2010. Ukrop's continued through its bakery and kitchen operations, with goods sold under the Good Meadow and Ukrop's brands.
