UNIVAC, short for Universal Automatic Computer, began as a line of electronic digital stored-program computers developed by the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly had previously built ENIAC at the University of Pennsylvania between 1943 and 1946, then formed the Electronic Control Company in 1946 after a patent rights dispute; it was later renamed EMCC. Development of UNIVAC began in April 1946 for the Bureau of the Census. EMCC was sold to Remington Rand on February 15, 1950, and the first UNIVAC I was delivered on March 31, 1951. Its widely noted 1952 election forecast brought the name public attention. Remington Rand combined its computing groups under the UNIVAC name in 1953 or 1954. Following the 1955 merger with Sperry Corporation, the business became part of Sperry Rand. The UNIVAC identity later became Sperry Univac and then the Sperry Computer Systems Division. Sperry merged with Burroughs in 1986 to form Unisys, which continues support for the 1100 and 2200 lineage through ClearPath Forward Dorado systems.
