UNIVAC, short for Universal Automatic Computer, began as a line of electronic digital stored-program computers developed by the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, builders of ENIAC at the University of Pennsylvania from 1943 to 1946, formed their own company after a patent dispute in 1946. Development of UNIVAC started in April that year for the Bureau of the Census. Following the death of backer Henry L. Straus, the company was sold to Remington Rand on February 15, 1950. The first UNIVAC I was delivered on March 31, 1951, and gained national attention for its 1952 presidential-election prediction. Remington Rand combined its computer operations under the UNIVAC name in 1953 or 1954. After its 1955 merger with Sperry Corporation, the business became part of Sperry Rand and later Sperry. The UNIVAC name was ultimately replaced by Sperry Computer Systems Division in the mid-1980s. Sperry merged with Burroughs in 1986 to form Unisys, which continues the enterprise-computing lineage.
