Celebrate an unusual chapter in New York transportation with this US Helicopter dad cap. The independent air shuttle began flying in 2006, linking Manhattan to JFK and later extending its network to Newark and seasonal coastal destinations. Flights operated from the Downtown Manhattan and East 34th Street heliports, placing airport travel in the heart of the city. With its sudden 2009 shutdown, US Helicopter remains a compelling subject for airline collectors and fans of urban aviation history.
US Helicopter was an independent air shuttle service headquartered at the Downtown Manhattan Heliport, Pier 6, East River, in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It began service in March 2006, connecting Manhattan with John F. Kennedy International Airport and, later, Newark Liberty International Airport and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Flights to JFK departed from the Downtown Manhattan and East 34th Street heliports; the East 34th Street service began in September 2006. Newark service followed in November 2006, using a secured area in Continental Airlines’ Terminal C. The company also offered charter flights and seasonal routes to East Hampton, New York, and Belmar, New Jersey. Its fleet comprised three Sikorsky S-76B helicopters, each configured for eight passengers and operated by two pilots. A planned order for Sikorsky S-76C aircraft was canceled after the company’s financial collapse. Facing severe financial difficulties in 2009, US Helicopter borrowed operating funds at high interest rates. It abruptly shut down on September 25, 2009. The following month, it reported that it lacked the resources to continue filing securities reports or preparing financial statements. The airline never resumed operations.
