Keep a familiar Missouri retail name in view with this Vandervoort's Square Porcelain Fridge Magnet. Founded in St. Louis in 1850, the company grew from a dry goods shop on North 4th Street into a department store remembered for fashion shows and changing locations. Its history reached The Syndicate, Clayton, and Crestwood, reflecting decades of local shopping. A small keepsake for St. Louis history enthusiasts, department store collectors, and anyone who values regional business stories.
Scruggs, Vandervoort & Barney began in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1850 as McClelland, Scruggs & Company, founded by M.V.L. McClelland and Richard Scruggs. Its first store was a dry goods shop on North 4th Street in downtown St. Louis, and the business later expanded. William L. Vandervoort joined in 1860; in 1870, McClelland retired and Charles E. Barney took his place. In 1907, the company moved to The Syndicate at Tenth and Olive streets. In 1917, it acquired Mermod Jaccard King Jewelry Company and incorporated into that company’s downtown location. Known for holding fashion shows, the retailer was called Vandervoort’s by the 1950s, when it opened a branch in Clayton, Missouri, followed later by one at Crestwood Plaza in Crestwood. Facing financial pressures, Vandervoort’s closed in 1969. That year, Famous-Barr took over the Crestwood Plaza branch.
