Product Details & Size Guide
Keep a reminder of St. Louis retail heritage close at hand with this Vandervoort’s tough phone case. The company’s story began in 1850 as McClelland, Scruggs & Company, then grew through downtown moves, a jewelry-company acquisition, and suburban branches in Clayton and Crestwood. Known for fashion shows, Vandervoort’s reflected the changing tastes and shopping habits of its region. This design honors a distinctive local name and the long history behind it.
Scruggs, Vandervoort & Barney began in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1850 as McClelland, Scruggs & Company, founded by M.V.L. McClelland and Richard Scruggs. Its first store was a dry goods shop on North 4th Street in downtown St. Louis, and the business later expanded. William L. Vandervoort joined in 1860; in 1870, McClelland retired and Charles E. Barney took his place. In 1907, the company moved to The Syndicate at Tenth and Olive streets. In 1917, it acquired Mermod Jaccard King Jewelry Company and incorporated into that company’s downtown location. Known for holding fashion shows, the retailer was called Vandervoort’s by the 1950s, when it opened a branch in Clayton, Missouri, followed later by one at Crestwood Plaza in Crestwood. Facing financial pressures, Vandervoort’s closed in 1969. That year, Famous-Barr took over the Crestwood Plaza branch.
