GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Bring a conversation-starting piece of airline history to your next gathering with a can cooler inspired by Vanguard Airlines. Based in Kansas City, the carrier opened for scheduled service in 1994 and built a route map that shifted as it pursued new markets, including Chicago Midway. Its brief life through 2002 reflects the opportunities and challenges facing smaller airlines during a period of change. A fun choice for aviation fans, airline memorabilia collectors, and anyone nostalgic for the era of independent carriers.
Vanguard Airlines was a low-cost airline based in Kansas City, Missouri, where it operated a hub from 1994 to 2002. Founded by Bob McAdoo, the airline began scheduled service on November 15, 1994, flying from Kansas City to Denver and continuing to Salt Lake City. Its early point-to-point model paired low fares with service to smaller cities near major markets. Routes changed frequently as the company expanded from Kansas City to destinations including Dallas/Fort Worth, Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Wichita, Los Angeles, and New York. It also developed significant operations at Chicago Midway, including a focus city there in 1999, before scaling them back. In 2000, Vanguard began shifting from a low-fare approach toward a broader low-cost carrier model, emphasizing service and operational performance alongside price. The September 11, 2001 attacks disrupted that recovery. Vanguard flew leased Boeing 727 and 737 aircraft and McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series jets. After filing for bankruptcy, it ceased operations on July 29, 2002. National Airlines and Frontier Airlines offered assistance to stranded passengers; a later purchase offer was rejected, and Vanguard was liquidated.
