The Varney Speed Lines story began in 1926, when a Boise-based carrier took on the CAM-5 airmail route between Pasco and Elko. As its network and aircraft evolved, the company helped connect the pioneering mail era to the growth of passenger aviation. This beanie offers a simple way to wear that history, whether you are an airline memorabilia collector, an aviation enthusiast, or someone drawn to the early routes that shaped commercial flight.
Varney Air Lines was formed by Walter Varney and began service as an airmail carrier on April 6, 1926, based in Boise, Idaho. After the Kelly Act of 1925 authorized private carriers to transport mail, Varney won the CAM-5 contract as its sole bidder. The route ran from Pasco, Washington, to Elko, Nevada, with a stop in Boise; pilot Leon D. Cuddeback made the first eastbound contract flight on April 9, 1926. The airline upgraded from Swallow aircraft to Stearman models, Boeing mail planes and, in 1933, the Boeing 247, which expanded its capacity for passengers as well as mail. Its routes grew to include Salt Lake City, Portland and Seattle. In 1930, Varney became part of United Aircraft and Transport Corporation, alongside several other airlines. After that corporation was broken up in 1934, its airlines group became United Airlines, making Varney one of United's predecessors. In 1934, Robert F. Six bought into Varney Speed Lines' Southwest Division, which included the Pueblo-El Paso route. The carrier was renamed Continental Air Lines in 1937. United, Varney's direct successor, later merged with Continental in 2010.

This cuffed beanie carries a lived-in street energy—soft, warm, and quietly bold. The low-profile embroidery sits on the cuff like a personal insignia: a small, slightly distressed logo with a touch of red that reads as both vintage and current. It slips on easily and stays put through commutes, late-night walks, and chilly market runs, adding a subtle graphic edge without shouting.
Wear it with a worn denim jacket, layered knit, or an oversized coat. It works for creatives who like to curate a look that’s casual but considered, for city cyclists who need dependable warmth, or for anyone who favors compact, tactile details. The hypoallergenic acrylic knit keeps things comfortable against the skin while the 12" cuff gives you styling flexibility—fold it high for warmth or roll it low for a slouchier silhouette. This is a small, everyday piece that quietly completes an outfit and ages into its own personality.
