Celebrate Vehicle Production Group and its ambitious place in American mobility history. VPG introduced the Standard Taxi concept in 2005, then shifted its focus to the MV-1, developed with AM General and built in Mishawaka. Production began in 2011, paused in 2013, and later returned under Mobility Ventures before the MV-1 run ended in 2016. Vehicle Production Group LLC, commonly known as VPG, was an American automobile manufacturer based in Miami, Florida. It developed purpose-built wheelchair-accessible taxis. Its first design, the Standard Taxi, was unveiled at transportation and taxi-industry conferences in 2005. A 2008 agreement with AM General called for the vehicle to be built in Indiana, but the Standard Taxi never entered series production. VPG instead developed the MV-1, or Mobility Vehicle 1, in collaboration with AM General. Built at AM General’s plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, the MV-1 began production in 2011. VPG halted new-vehicle production in February 2013 and closed in May after its finances fell below the minimum condition tied to a $50 million US Department of Energy clean-energy loan awarded in March 2011. In September 2013, AM General agreed to acquire VPG’s assets after purchasing the loan for $3 million, then formed Mobility Ventures as a wholly owned subsidiary to resume MV-1 production and distribution. Production restarted on March 11, 2014. After AM General accepted an offer from SF Motors for the Mishawaka plant in 2016, MV-1 production ended.
