Established in 1997, Via Airlines first focused on charter flights before expanding into scheduled service under the ViaAir name. The carrier connected smaller communities with destinations such as Charlotte and St. Augustine, and later announced routes from Austin. Via Airlines was established on March 27, 1997, and initially operated public and private charter flights for corporations, sports teams, casinos, and other air travel functions. The company later expanded into scheduled passenger service under the ViaAir name. Scheduled Essential Air Service flights began in December 2014, connecting Beckley and Parkersburg, West Virginia, with Charlotte, North Carolina. The inaugural Beckley flight took place on December 3, 2014; seasonal nonstop service between Charlotte and St. Augustine, Florida, began on December 19. Following a trial, the airline continued St. Augustine service. ViaAir also offered Air Tours, begun in 2009, and AirCruise, introduced in 2011, with flights operated by the Charter Air Transport fleet. In 2017 and 2018, ViaAir announced additional destinations from Austin, including Oklahoma City, Tucson, Little Rock, and Tulsa. In May 2019, it suspended most commercial operations, citing a pilot shortage, and Austin service ended that month. Via Airlines announced a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in October 2019 and ceased all operations. In July 2020, Florida investment firm Wexford Capital acquired the airline and announced plans to relaunch it under a new name.
