Virus Music was founded in 2004 as a record-label imprint of Legend Recordings S.A., an independent Greek record company based in Athens. At launch, the imprint was headed by Miltos Karadsas, formerly managing director of Minos EMI. Drawing on his earlier work helping foster the independent Greek company Nitro Music, Karadsas developed Virus Music to compete with multinational labels gaining influence in the Greek market. The imprint emphasized artist development and signed new and young performers of the period, including Apostolia Zoi and Annet Artani. Although Virus Music was new to the Greek music industry, its parent company had been a prominent independent label across genres since 1994. Legend Recordings was owned by Modern Times, known in Greek as Μοντέρνοι Καιροί, which was described as one of Greece’s largest media companies at the time. In 2011, Modern Times owner Kostas Giannikos was arrested and convicted on embezzlement charges. The resulting circumstances led eventually to the label’s closure, marking the end of Virus Music’s place in the Greek independent-label landscape.
