Wachovia began in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on June 16, 1879, as Wachovia National Bank, co-founded by James Alexander Gray and William Lemly. In 1911 it merged with Wachovia Loan and Trust Company, founded in 1893. The bank expanded across the Southeast, acquiring First Atlanta in 1986, South Carolina National Corporation in 1991, Florida institutions in 1997, and Virginia banks in 1998. In 2001, Charlotte-based First Union acquired Wachovia in a stock transaction, but the combined company adopted the Wachovia name and ticker while retaining First Union's corporate structure. The company later acquired SouthTrust in 2004, Golden West Financial in 2006, and A. G. Edwards in 2007. During the 2008 financial crisis, Wells Fargo agreed to acquire Wachovia; the transaction closed December 31, 2008. The Wachovia name was phased into the Wells Fargo brand over three years, with final branch conversions completed October 15, 2011.
