Its principal predecessor firms included Prudential Securities and First Union Securities. The Prudential lineage began with Leopold Cahn & Co., founded in New York in 1879, renamed J.S. Bache & Co. in 1892, shortened to Bache & Co. in 1945, acquired by Prudential Insurance Company of America in 1981, and renamed Prudential Securities in 1991. The First Union lineage began with J.C. Wheat & Co., founded in Richmond, Virginia, in 1934. First Union acquired Wheat First Butcher Singer in 1998 and Everen Capital Corporation in 1999. First Union acquired Wachovia in 2001 and adopted the Wachovia name. In 2002, First Union Securities became Wachovia Securities after merging with IJL Wachovia. Wells Fargo completed its acquisition of Wachovia on December 31, 2008. On May 1, 2009, retail brokerage operations became Wells Fargo Advisors, while institutional capital markets and investment banking became Wells Fargo Securities.
