Its principal predecessor firms included Prudential Securities and First Union Securities. The Prudential lineage began with Leopold Cahn & Co., founded in New York in 1879, renamed J.S. Bache & Co. in 1892, shortened to Bache & Co. in 1945, acquired by Prudential Insurance Company of America in 1981, and renamed Prudential Securities in 1991. The First Union lineage began with J.C. Wheat & Co., founded in Richmond, Virginia, in 1934. First Union acquired Wheat First Butcher Singer in 1998 and Everen Capital Corporation in 1999.
