Carry a piece of New York supermarket history with a Waldbaum's Backpack. Waldbaum's began with a Brooklyn grocery store in 1904 and grew into a familiar name across Queens, Long Island, Staten Island, the Bronx, and the wider metropolitan area. Its story includes the first supermarket in Flushing, family leadership, neighborhood shopping, and decades of regional recognition. This backpack brings that enduring grocery connection into everyday commutes, errands, travel, and collector collections.
Waldbaum's began in 1904, when brothers Sam and Wolf Waldbaum opened a grocery store in Brooklyn after immigrating from the Galician region of Ukraine. Their nephew, Israel "Izzy" Waldbaum, joined the business and later took over after his uncles retired. In 1948, Izzy's son Ira assumed leadership of six Brooklyn stores. The company opened its first supermarket in Flushing, Queens, in 1951, went public in 1961 while the family retained majority ownership, and reached 25 stores and $80 million in sales that year. Waldbaum's acquired the Food Mart chain in Connecticut and Massachusetts in 1970. At its 1980s peak, it ranked as the United States' 12th-largest supermarket chain, with 140 New York metropolitan area stores. In November 1986, The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company acquired controlling interest, while the Waldbaum family continued managing the stores. After A&P's 2015 bankruptcy, locations were sold to Stop & Shop, Key Food, Best Yet Market, Wakefern Food Corporation, and other operators. All Waldbaum's stores were sold or closed by November 2015. In December 2018, American Legacy Brands purchased the intellectual property rights for A&P and Waldbaum's for potential private-label licensing.
