This Washington Mutual Heavy Knit Quarter-Zip Sweatshirt reflects the long arc of a Seattle-born financial institution. WaMu started in 1889 as a mutual savings association, made an early West Coast home mortgage loan, expanded through acquisitions, and became a nationally known retail bank. Its seizure in 2008 and the disappearance of its branch identity created lasting interest among collectors. Washington Mutual, Inc., often called WaMu, was an American savings bank holding company based in Seattle. It began as the Washington National Building Loan and Investment Association on September 25, 1889, after the Great Seattle Fire, and made its first West Coast home mortgage loan on February 10, 1890. The organization adopted the Washington Mutual Savings Bank name in 1917, demutualized in 1983, and reorganized as a holding company in 1994. During its expansion, it acquired or combined with businesses including Murphey Favre, Western Bank, American Savings Bank, Great Western, Home Savings of America, Bank United, Dime Bancorp, Providian and several mortgage companies. On September 25, 2008, regulators seized its banking operations after a major deposit run and placed them into FDIC receivership. Most banking assets and branches were sold to JPMorgan Chase for $1.9 billion. WaMu branches were rebranded as Chase branches by the end of 2009. The holding company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware on September 26, 2008.
