Wayne Corporation was an American manufacturer based in Richmond, Indiana, in Wayne County. Its history began in 1837, when the Witt family established a foundry in Dublin, Indiana. Wayne Agricultural Company formed in 1871 and moved to Richmond in 1875; after receivership, it became Wayne Works in 1888. The company progressed from horse-drawn wagons and 1892 school vehicles to automobile bodies, complete automobiles, and motorized school buses, introducing its first chassis-mounted School Car in 1914. Wayne pioneered all-steel bus construction, safety glass, guard rails, sectional bodies, the cutaway-chassis Busette, and the 1973 Lifeguard body design with continuous longitudinal panels. Wayne Works merged with Divco in 1956, becoming Divco-Wayne. The business passed to Boise Cascade in 1968 and then to Indian Head, which transferred ownership to Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1975. A new Richmond factory opened near Interstate 70 in 1967. After industry overcapacity and declining demand, Wayne declared bankruptcy and discontinued operations in 1992. The Wayne brand was reorganized later that year as Wayne Wheeled Vehicles, which operated through 1995. The Richmond factory was later used by Carpenter from 1996 until its closure in 2000.
