Wayne Corporation was an American vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. Its history began in 1837, when the Witt family established a foundry in Dublin, Indiana. The business moved to Richmond in 1875, reorganized as Wayne Works in 1888, and evolved from horse-drawn wagons and student-transport “school cars” into automobile bodies and buses. Wayne introduced its first motorized School Car in 1914, adopted full-steel bus construction in 1930, and developed major safety features including guard rails, safety glass, and the 1973 Lifeguard body with continuous longitudinal panels. The 1956 merger with Divco created Divco-Wayne Corporation. Ownership later passed to Boise Cascade in 1968, then Indian Head and Thyssen-Bornemisza. A new Richmond plant opened near Interstate 70 in 1967. Wayne introduced the Busette in 1973, helping establish the cutaway-chassis small-bus format. After market overcapacity and losses during the 1980s, Wayne declared bankruptcy and discontinued operations in 1992. The brand was briefly reorganized as Wayne Wheeled Vehicles through 1995, while the Richmond factory was later used by Carpenter before closing in 2000.
