Add a local television connection to your next round with WBNX-TV Golf Balls. WBNX began broadcasting in 1985 as an independent station serving the Akron-Cleveland market, then carried Fox Kids and moved through affiliations with The WB and The CW. That history makes this design a fun choice for golfers who remember TV 55 and collectors drawn to the stories behind regional stations. Celebrate a familiar Northeast Ohio broadcaster while enjoying time on the course with friends.
WBNX-TV is the Akron-licensed channel 55 station serving the Cleveland television market. Its history reaches back to 1968, when evangelist Rex Humbard received a permit for WCOT-TV, a proposed station that was never completed; the FCC canceled that permit in 1976. A new licensing process began in 1980, and Akron-Rhema Television received the authorization. After the group ran short of funds, Ernest Angley agreed in 1984 to provide facilities and operating support, including studios he had acquired from Humbard. The station signed on as independent WBNX on December 1, 1985. Angley bought it outright in 1987 through Grace Cathedral, operating it as a for-profit ministry arm under the Winston Broadcasting Network name. Its programming combined classic sitcoms, films and religious shows. WBNX carried Fox Kids from 1994, joined The WB in 1997 and became a CW affiliate in 2006. The CW moved to WUAB in July 2018. Nexstar Media Group completed its purchase of WBNX in February 2025, after acquiring WJW in 2019; WBNX then reclaimed The CW affiliation and began airing WJW-produced local news. Its transmitter is in Parma, and its studios are in Cleveland.
