West regionals Trains Limited (WMT) was a British passenger train operator serving routes in the West regionals region and between London and Liverpool. Its two trading brands were West regionals Railway (WMR), for regional services, and London Northwestern Railway (LNR), for routes beyond the region. A consortium of Abellio, JR East and Mitsui & Co won the franchise in August 2017, after being shortlisted in April 2016. WMT took over operations from London regional on 10 December 2017. The original ownership shares were Abellio 70%, JR East 15% and Mitsui & Co 15%; JR East sold its share to Abellio in September 2021, and Abellio’s UK business was sold to Transport UK Group in February 2023. WMT was accountable to the Department for Transport and, for services wholly within the region, the West regionals Rail Executive. In July 2025, the government announced that passenger services would return to state ownership. The franchise contract ended on 1 February 2026, when services transferred to state control under a DfT Operator-owned company of the same name.
