Western Maryland Railway, reporting mark WM and nicknamed the Wild Mary, was a Class I railroad that operated from 1852 to 1983 across Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, with headquarters in Baltimore. Its origins trace to the Baltimore, Carroll and Frederick Railroad, chartered in 1852 and renamed the Western Maryland Rail Road Company in 1853. Construction began at Owings Mills in 1857; the line reached Westminster in 1861, Union Bridge in 1862, and Hagerstown in 1872. The railroad expanded through Pennsylvania and the Allegheny Highlands, serving coal, timber, and heavy freight traffic, while passenger service continued until 1959. The West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway became part of WM in 1905, and the company emerged from receivership after a 1909 reorganization. C&O and B&O gained control in 1968, and WM became part of the Chessie System in 1973 while retaining independent operations for a time. It was merged into B&O in 1983; B&O and C&O later joined in 1987, followed by the formation of CSX Transportation that year.
