Western Pacific Railroad, reporting mark WP, was a Class I railroad created in 1903 to challenge the limited rail access into northern California. Its roots also include an earlier Western Pacific Railroad established in 1862 to build the western end of the first transcontinental railroad from Sacramento toward San Jose and later Oakland; that company was absorbed by Central Pacific Railroad in 1870. The 1903 Western Pacific Railway, directed by George Jay Gould I, acquired the Alameda and San Joaquin Railroad and built the Feather River Route. Completed in 1909, the route linked Oakland, California, with the Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah, area and was the last major rail line connected to California. Following a bond default, its assets were sold in 1916 to The Western Pacific Railroad Company. WP reorganized after bankruptcy in 1935, operated the California Zephyr from 1949 to 1970, and retired its final revenue steam locomotive in 1953. Union Pacific Corporation acquired WP in 1982; the transaction closed in 1983, combining it into the Union Pacific rail system.
