GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
For long drives, travel days, and aviation-history collections, this WinAir Airlines travel mug recalls a brief but distinctive carrier. Founded in Salt Lake City in 1997, WinAir began with a Super Bowl charter in January 1998 and later operated public scheduled charter flights from Long Beach to destinations including Las Vegas, Oakland, Sacramento, and Salt Lake City. Financial and maintenance difficulties contributed to its shutdown in July 1999. The airline's short run makes this a memorable nod to an overlooked chapter of U.S. aviation.
WinAir Airlines was a short-lived U.S. charter passenger airline founded by Richard I. Winwood and established in 1997, with its base in Salt Lake City, Utah. Its first flight was a Super Bowl charter on January 25, 1998. Experienced personnel, including staff from Morris Air, Key Airlines, and Champion Air, helped the airline gain certification rapidly. In November 1998, WinAir began public scheduled charter flights from its hub at Long Beach Municipal Airport in California, serving Las Vegas, Oakland, Sacramento, and Salt Lake City. It sought FAA authority to operate as a scheduled passenger airline, but did not receive that authorization before closing. Financial difficulties and maintenance concerns involving leased Boeing 737-400 aircraft contributed to the shutdown on July 6, 1999. The airline had operated 10 aircraft: five Boeing 737-200s, two 737-300s, and three 737-400s. Planned service to Seattle was canceled before launch after WinAir could not finalize a passenger-guarantee contract with Boeing amid competition from other carriers. WinAir also appeared in the film For Love of the Game, released in September 1999, after the airline had ceased operations.
