Keep notes beside a reminder of Wings West Airlines and California commuter aviation. Founded in 1979, the carrier started with a flight from Santa Monica to Mammoth Lakes and went on to serve regional communities across California and beyond. It became an American Eagle affiliate in 1986, then joined Simmons Airlines and Flagship Airlines in a 1998 merger. This note pad brings airline history into a desk, study space or collector’s display, with a story rooted in regional routes and changing airline brands.
Founded by Mark Morro and William Hirsch, Wings West began scheduled commuter service in 1979, flying Cessna 402 twin-prop aircraft between California destinations. Its first flight, on November 11, 1979, ran from Santa Monica to Mammoth Lakes. The airline expanded its California network and added service to Arizona, operating aircraft including Beechcraft C99s and Fairchild Swearingen Metroliners. It became publicly traded in 1983. In 1986, Wings West began operating under the American Eagle name through a code-sharing agreement with American Airlines; AMR Corp. purchased the airline the following year. Its American Eagle service connected regional communities with hubs including San Jose, Los Angeles and San Francisco, using aircraft such as Convair 580s, Metroliners and Saab 340Bs. The airline was headquartered at McChesney Field in San Luis Obispo County, California. In 1996, Mary B. Jordan was named president. In 1998, Wings West merged with Simmons Airlines and Flagship Airlines into AMR Eagle Holdings Corporation, forming American Eagle Airlines, now known as Envoy Air.
