Founded in Philadelphia in 1903 by Horace Stern and Morris Wolf, WolfBlock grew from a local law practice into a sizable regional firm. One of its first major clients was the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company, a predecessor of SEPTA. After World War II, the firm acquired several smaller firms, extending its reach. It was known as Wolf, Block, Schorr & Solis-Cohen before using the WolfBlock name. In 2002, it established WolfBlock Government Relations L.P. in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and expanded that lobbying subsidiary into Washington, D.C., the following year. A proposed merger with Miami-based Akerman Senterfitt, which would have formed a firm with about 800 lawyers, was put on hold on August 7, 2008, after the firms cited a client conflict. On March 23, 2009, WolfBlock's partners voted for an orderly unwinding and dissolution. The firm cited the recession, financial-market disruption, strain on its credit line, and anticipated departures of partners and practices. It remained in practice for several months to protect client, employee, and creditor interests.
