Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Set up your screen with a reminder of the stores that shaped Washington shopping. This Woodward & Lothrop Foldable Mobile Phone Display Stand celebrates a company founded in 1873, moved to the capital in 1880, and recognized as Washington's first department store in 1887. Woodies grew from a downtown F Street presence into suburban malls, becoming part of the region's retail memory before its 1995 closure. A useful desk accessory with a story for collectors of department store history.
Woodward & Lothrop began in 1873, when Samuel Walter Woodward and Alvin Mason Lothrop opened a dry goods store in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and operated several stores in the Boston area. On February 8, 1880, they moved to Washington, D.C., with partner Charles E. Cochrane, opening Woodward, Lothrop & Cochrane at Market Space. After moves to larger downtown locations, Woodward and Lothrop bought Cochrane's share, and the store took the Woodward & Lothrop name. The company became the capital's first department store in 1887 and developed a flagship on F Street, later expanding into suburban malls after World War II. Known as Woodies, it competed with Garfinckel's and acquired Palais Royal. In 1984, A. Alfred Taubman acquired the chain; his later holdings included Wanamaker's, which became a subsidiary. Woodward & Lothrop filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on January 18, 1994. In 1995, seven stores went to J. C. Penney, while the remaining Woodward & Lothrop and Wanamaker's locations went to May Department Stores Company. Liquidation ended and the stores closed by November 1995. The former flagship, a D.C. landmark since 1964, reopened in 2003 after redevelopment.
