Zany Brainy was an American retail chain founded in 1991 by David Schlessinger, who had previously started the Encore Books bookstore chain. A subsidiary of FAO Schwarz, it sold educational toys and multimedia products for children ages 4 to 13. Its assortment included games, puzzles, books, music and video recordings, arts and crafts, building toys, trains, computer software, electronic learning aids, musical instruments, science toys, dolls, and sports-themed toys. Stores also hosted daily activities such as workshops, concerts, and author appearances. The chain acquired rival Noodle Kidoodle in 2000, after which it faced financial difficulties. Zany Brainy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 15, 2001. Its assets were sold to Right Start later that year, when the chain had 187 retail locations across the United States. The remaining stores were announced for closure in December 2003. Schlessinger and former Zany Brainy CEO Thomas Vellios later opened discount retailer Five Below in October 2002. In 2020, Zany Brainy returned as an online store offering a select line of products.
