Zayre expanded across eastern U.S. markets and became a publicly traded company in 1962. Its parent, Zayre Corp., also developed specialty retail businesses, including Hit or Miss and T.J. Maxx; TJX became a subsidiary in 1987. In October 1988, Zayre Corp. sold nearly 400 Zayre stores to Ames Department Stores. The following year, Zayre Corp. merged with TJX and took the name The TJX Companies, Inc. By 1990, remaining Zayre stores had closed or been converted to Ames stores.
