Product Details & Size Guide
GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Celebrate a recognizable name in American retail history with this Zayre square porcelain fridge magnet. Zayre opened its first discount store in Hyannis in 1956 and grew into a broad eastern U.S. chain before stores closed or changed hands. The company's roots reach back to a Boston apparel wholesaler founded in 1919, making its story part of a much longer retail journey. A compact keepsake for collectors, former shoppers, and anyone who enjoys remembering the stores that once served their communities.
Zayre was an American discount-store chain that operated in the eastern half of the United States from 1956 to 1990, with headquarters in Framingham, Massachusetts. Its roots go back to 1919, when brothers Max and Morris Feldberg founded the New England Trading Company in Boston as an underwear and hosiery wholesaler. They later built the Bell Shops retail chain and acquired New York-based Nugents in 1946. Seeking a new direction as downtown retail declined, the family opened its first Zayre discount store in Hyannis, Massachusetts, on September 20, 1956, followed soon by a Boston location. Zayre expanded across eastern U.S. markets and became a publicly traded company in 1962. Its parent, Zayre Corp., also developed specialty retail businesses, including Hit or Miss and T.J. Maxx; TJX became a subsidiary in 1987. In October 1988, Zayre Corp. sold nearly 400 Zayre stores to Ames Department Stores. The following year, Zayre Corp. merged with TJX and took the name The TJX Companies, Inc. By 1990, remaining Zayre stores had closed or been converted to Ames stores.
