Hartfield-Zodys began in 1960, when the Los Angeles-area Hartfield women's ready-to-wear business entered discount retail with its new Zodys chain. The first Zodys store opened June 13, 1960, in Garden Grove, California. Hartfield had operated in Los Angeles-area shopping districts since at least the 1940s, including locations on South Broadway. The parent company adopted the Hartfield-Zodys name in 1962, and by 1969 the chain had 19 stores and a distribution center that employed 300 people. In 1972 it acquired the Yankee Stores chain of Flint, Michigan, briefly using the Yankee-Zodys name before rebranding those stores as Zodys. The Michigan stores were sold in 1974, the year the company sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. After a period of expansion into Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico, the chain reached 37 stores in 1979. By the early 1980s, the parent company was known as HRT Industries and began closing stores in 1984. The remaining California Zodys stores closed in March 1986; many locations were sold to Federated Stores and HomeClub.
