Zoom Telephonics began in 1977 in Boston, Massachusetts, founded by Frank B. Manning and Bruce Kramer, two MIT graduates and longtime friends. Its first product, the Silencer, was a telephone ringer modification kit; an automatic dialer introduced in 1980 helped the company grow. Zoom shifted toward computer networking with its Networker dial-up modem in 1983, serving microcomputers including the Apple II and IBM PC. After building retail recognition, it went public on Nasdaq in 1990. As Internet use spread in the mid-1990s, Zoom became a modem-market leader and acquired Hayes Microcomputer Products in July 1999, using that name on some high-end modems. Broadband competition weakened its position in the early 2000s. A five-year licensing agreement beginning in 2016 allowed Zoom to use the Motorola brand on home network and cable products, and sales increased. In December 2020, Zoom merged with Minim, Inc., adopted the Minim name, and moved its headquarters from Boston to Manchester, New Hampshire. Minim later sold cable modems, gateways, WiFi routers, mesh WiFi systems, and home automation products. After announcing financial difficulties in September 2023, Minim was acquired in March 2024 by Florida-based energy management company e2Companies.
