Product Details & Size Guide

GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Bring a distinctive Bay Area startup story along for the day with this Zymergen Golf Towel. Founded in Emeryville in 2013, Zymergen joined genomics and machine learning with microbial engineering, hoping to develop new materials for manufacturing. Its Hyaline product era, public listing, change in direction, and eventual liquidation capture the uncertain arc of a once ambitious biotechnology company. A conversation piece for collectors interested in synthetic biology, technology history, and the changing fortunes of 2010s startups.

Founded in 2013 in Emeryville, California, Zymergen was a biotechnology company established by Joshua Hoffman, Zach Serber, and Jed Dean, who had met while working at Amyris. It used genomics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to study and modify microbes that ferment carbon into chemicals for consumer goods and pharmaceuticals, including potential alternatives to petroleum-derived materials. After raising successive rounds of funding, including $130 million from SoftBank's Vision Fund in 2016, Zymergen acquired Radiant Genomics in 2018. Its first product, Hyaline, a bio-manufactured polyimide film, was released in December 2020 for possible use in flexible consumer electronics. Zymergen went public in April 2021, but later disclosures described manufacturing difficulties, limited revenue, and losses. In August 2021, Hoffman resigned as CEO and Jay Flatley became acting CEO. That November, the company said it was abandoning Hyaline and shifting its focus to drug and vaccine development. In July 2022, Ginkgo Bioworks agreed to acquire Zymergen for $300 million in an all-stock deal. Zymergen filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 3, 2023, and announced liquidation on February 5, 2024, after selling its remaining assets.
