ARCO (Atlantic Richfield Company)
Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
ARCO — short for Atlantic Richfield Company — was one of America’s biggest oil companies and a familiar name to generations of drivers across the country. The company was created in 1966 through the merger of Atlantic Refining Company and Richfield Oil Corporation, combining two petroleum businesses with histories stretching back to the early days of the American oil industry.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, ARCO became a major force in exploration, refining, pipelines, and gasoline retailing. The company played an especially important role in developing Alaska’s North Slope oil fields and became one of the best-known energy brands in the western United States, where its red, white, and blue diamond logo became a roadside fixture.
In 2000, BP acquired Atlantic Richfield, ending ARCO’s run as an independent oil giant. The ARCO name survived at gas stations, but the corporation behind it disappeared into one of the energy industry’s many waves of mergers and consolidation.
The signs stayed. The company didn’t.
Our ARCO collection celebrates the classic diamond logo, roadside gas stations, and the legacy of one of America’s most recognizable petroleum companies.
