Faubourg Brewing
Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Faubourg Brewing Company was the final name of a New Orleans beer institution founded by Valentine Merz in 1907 as Dixie Brewing Company. Its original brewery stood at Tulane Avenue and Tonti Street, turning out a familiar local lager through boom times, Prohibition-era reinvention as Dixie Beverage Company, and enough neighborhood stories to fill a parade route.
The original brewery was devastated by Hurricane Katrina flooding in 2005. Beer production continued through contract brewers outside Louisiana until the brand returned home: a new New Orleans East brewery resumed production in late 2019, with the larger public opening following in January 2020. Nothing says a comeback quite like an 80,000-square-foot brewhouse, a taproom, and a very determined city.
In 2017, Tom and Gayle Benson acquired a majority share of the business; Gayle Benson continued the revival after Tom Benson’s 2018 death. The company announced the retirement of the Dixie name in 2020 and officially relaunched as Faubourg Brewing Company in March 2021, choosing a New Orleans word for neighborhood over an old label carrying more baggage than a Mardi Gras float.
Made By The Water acquired a portion of Faubourg in 2022. Large-scale brewing and packaging stopped at the Jourdan Road facility in 2023, and Faubourg permanently closed after its May 1, 2024 Daze Between NOLA event; its plant equipment was auctioned that June.
Our Faubourg Brewing collection celebrates the long pour from 1907 lager lore to the final New Orleans East last call: brick towers, cold cans, neighborhood bars, and a brewery ghost that still knows how to make an entrance.
