Founded in California in 1985, Fry’s Electronics grew into one of the strangest and most beloved electronics chains in America. Its enormous stores sold everything from computer components and televisions to appliances, software, snacks, and enough cables to wire a small country — often inside buildings decorated with wildly elaborate themes ranging from ancient Egypt to flying saucers.

For years, Fry’s was a paradise for computer builders, gadget obsessives, and anyone who enjoyed wandering through 100,000 square feet of electronics they absolutely did not need.

Then the shelves started getting emptier.

After years of declining sales, supplier problems, and competition from online retailers, Fry’s abruptly shut down all of its stores in 2021.
