Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

J.B. Ivey & Company began in Charlotte, North Carolina, on February 18, 1900, when Joseph Benjamin Ivey and partners opened a dry-goods store at 231 North Tryon Street. It moved later that year to West Trade Street, then to North Tryon again in 1914. Retail was already a game of relocation, display windows, and trying not to look worried.

A new flagship rose at Fifth and North Tryon in 1924. The business incorporated in 1922, added Greenville, South Carolina, through its 1935 connection with Keith’s department store, and opened in Asheville in 1937. The Charlotte original stayed central while Ivey’s grew into a regional department-store name.

By the postwar era, Ivey’s had expanded through the Carolinas and Florida, selling the grand department-store spread: apparel, shoes, cosmetics, furniture, linens, jewelry, and household goods. In 1980, Marshall Field’s acquired Ivey’s; BATUS acquired Marshall Field’s in 1982. Corporate nesting dolls: a classic retail pastime.

In 1990, Dillard’s acquired 23 J.B. Ivey’s stores in Florida and the Carolinas, ending Ivey’s independent run and converting the chain into another chapter of department-store history. Charlotte’s Ivey’s building remains an especially durable reminder of the era.
